History of Cannon Air Force Base
Cannon Air Force Base was established in 1942 as Clovis Army Air Field. During World War II, it was used as a training base for bomber and fighter pilots. In 1947, it was renamed Cannon Air Force Base in honor of General John K. Cannon, a World War II fighter pilot. Throughout the Cold War, Cannon AFB hosted various tactical fighter wings. In the 1990s, it transitioned to a focus on special operations.
